The Fifth Gear locknut retainer locks the nut to the spline on the main shaft. Compare OE main shaft with. Involute splines are self-centering, have curved sides, and offer greater torque-transmitting capacity than any other type.

I went to stop for a red light, and it wont come out of 5th. I pulled the shifter and the 5th , reverse shift rail is in the 5th gear position. The nut would come loose and the 5th gear would slide rearward causing it to loose 5th off the counter shaft and then lost somewhere in the tail housing. The solution is also simple, increase support. To provide a practical and customer installable design at a reasonable cost was the challenge.

Two year, 20mile warranty. Performance transmissions and Conversion Kits Available. for our newsletter. We use an upgraded lock nut to keep 5th gear from backing off.

There are a couple of other upgrades and this makes fifth gear as good as it gets. This resulted in a tiny small diameter 5th gear of only teeth, barely bigger than the shaft itself. To make matters worse, in order to keep such a small number of teeth from whining excessively they had to create a large angle helix on the gear.

The helix produces the thrust force that pushes the gear off the shaft.

All gear ranges including reverse are synchronized. The transmission is a top loader design with a cast iron gear case and an aluminum shift cover. Weighing in at about 24oz, our heavy-duty dual spanner wrench arrives ready and able. Repeated overloading can cause bearing and synchronizer wear ton acceleration. All rebuilt units are supplied with new bearings, seals and synchros.

All worn or defective parts are replaced. Transmission is dyno tested. I cant believe no one came up with something like this sooner. Fill Your Cart With Color Today! These low-geared GM boxes have since been discontinued and are generally much more difficult to obtain.

Comes with a two year, 20mile warranty. All forward gears are fully synchronized. This extra gear makes it a common conversion for trucks with speed transmissions. This trans is rated for 4lb-ft of torque, but can likely handle significantly more. A new Main shaft has been developed for the Dodge diesel which has had a history of premature failure due to the 5th gear backing off the main shaft.

Used on heavy duty models with and spline shafts. The inner splines on the syncrho being ripped off only happens from a lot of abuse or higher power trucks. What does it do you may ask? The splines were not long enough and they were manufactured with an incorrect angle.

Fixing the 5th Gear Nut To fix your 5th gear nut you need to remove a few things in order to get to them. I routinely check the fluid and it stays clean. I got back I had a terrible vibration which I found to be the vibration damper on the driveshaft slip yoke. The 5th gear nut problem usually occurs in heavy towing applications and lugging in 5th gear. The cummins trucks had big issues with this because that motor can really lug away in 5th gear , especially with the common 3. The best 5th gear upgrade in the business.

Everything from welding the main shaft to using specialized nuts and washers. Our company is at the pinnacle of the fifth gear upgrade technology. Why have two different wrenches to buy and keep track of when you can kill two birds with one wrench? OK transmission gurus out there.

I definitely would have if I pulled it completely, always do a clutch when you drop the trans! By implementing a reinforced main shaft with extended splines and a double-locking collar system. Jeeps, Broncos and Toyota Land Cruisers. I think the 5th gear lock nut problem was Dodge only.

Get updates straight to your inbox. Just got it back for the forth time for trans shop. An H55f would really be a lot better for you. It would bolt up to your engine and transfer case. The 5th gear hub of H55F transmissions are more prone to this problem than the 4spd transmissions.

Wear of the hub can start as a result of high loads on the transmission while in 5th gear (lugging up a hill, for example) or as a result of rowing back and forth between 5th and 4th while climging a hill to try to maintain speed. Just put new bearings and new updated shaft all synchronizers look good input shaft bearing looks good pretty much rebuild the entire transmission and transfer case before the noise put it in and still making the noise so where do I need to start looking. It is the ultimate because it is heavy duty, has a low first gear , and has an overdrive fifth gear.

Mine came off almost 5miles from home with the 5er in tow, made for a slow trip home in 4th gear. In the mountains it pulls comfortably using 3rd and 4th most of the time.
