Brake booster check valve test

In a pinch, turkey basters make great aspirators. If the check valve is functioning properly it should prevent you from blowing air into the hose. As the problem with the vacuum brake booster check valve increases, air bubbles will progressively move down the brake lines and to the brakes themselves. Cover the booster end of the check valve with a piece of cardboar rubber, or your hand and start the engine. If there is no vac leak, the valve is not the problem.

Here are a three tests I learned at college and would like to share with you. Before replacing the entire booster , make sure to test the check valve. The check valve is located where the vacuum hose connects to the brake booster. To perform the test , do the following: 1. A leaking brake booster may also cause an engine to run badly.


Leaks in the brake booster provide a vacuum leak to the engine. One quick test for leakage, is to turn the engine off and press the brake pedal. As your brake booster ages, the rubber seals and diaphragms that hold the vacuum tend to wear out and crack. IF BOOSTER IS NOT OPERATING GIVING A VERY HARD PEDAL. Disconnect the vacuum hose from the booster check valve and check the vacuum level at this point with the engine running with a vacuum gauge.


You should have at least vacuum to the booster. Note: 18”HG is the minimum engine vacuum at idle in gear to effectively operate a vacuum booster 1) Remove vacuum hose from check valve on booster. Place hose from vacuum pump onto check valve and draw booster to 20” of vacuum.


Let booster sit with vacuum applied for minutes.

I understand that if I blow through the check valve from the booster side that if air goes through to the hose side that the check valve is bad. This keeps the balance of the vacuum in the engine and the booster to better aid the driver in applying that needed pressure on the brake line. Keep your cars running at their best. It seems there should be a 1-way valve in the vacuum line to the brake booster for the WRX engines.


We know our parts and products. If air passes through the valve it is defective and must be replaced. Also look into the hose attachment neck on the check valve and be sure there is no obstruction inside the valve. Another key part of the power brakes is the check valve.


The photo above shows the check valve , which is a one-way valve that only allows air to be sucked out of the vacuum booster. Re: Bad brake booster check valve. If no then leaks in line from pump or the other check valve in the plumbing tying the vac pump to the intake manifold vac line need to be ruled out and then the pump or vacuum switch needs to be checked. Issue is moisture getting into the check valve in the line between the brake booster and the manifold. My solution was to remove the line, and run WD-thru it to remove. If this type of check valve goes ba you replace the entire vacuum hose.


Sometimes when a master cylinder fails, it leaks fluid into the brake booster. The plastic check valve looks like it costs about cents. Shop with us at wholesale prices and get free shipping over $50.


The next (or alternate test if the first was unsuccesful) is to use a vacuum pump with a gauge and connect it to the booster reservoir, pull a vacuum of 2 turn off the vacuum supply (close the valve ) and see if it holds the vacuum. It should hold for over one minute without dropping from the 20.
