Eventually the radiator and the reservoir will run dry and lead to the destruction of the engine. While detecting a coolant leak can be difficult, there are a few places to immediately look. Leaks in the water pump, heater core, or engine freeze plugs can also allow coolant to escape. These too are easy to diagnose by a visual inspection.

After replacing water pump, crank case seal and ensuring all hoses were free of holes, filled up the system and it all came out of the overflow. Replaced the radiator cap with OEM and filled it back up with the clear antifreeze as above and now no coolant leaking. Hoses that carry coolant from the engine to the radiator or to the heater core are also common sources of coolant leaks. Since most hoses are made of rubber, they wear out over time from the constant exposure to heat.


When the engine is cool you can squeeze the hoses to see if any feel brittle. One drawback to using radiator stop leak is that it can cause the coolant system to become clogged. One way that you can minimize, if not entirely prevent this clogging of the systems is by flushing the cooling system and changing the antifreeze.
