Camshaft seal leak

The camshaft seal is a round oil seal located in the cylinder head. It is responsible for sealing the end of the engine’s camshaft or camshafts between the top of the cylinder head and the valve cover gasket.

A leak from the camshaft seal or valve cover gasket are hard to tell apart if the valve cover gasket is leaking in the same area as the cam seal. I understand that a leaking camshaft seal can compromise the timing belt, leading to a catastrophic engine failure and damage (see this post). My with 31K on it was just diagnosed with the cam tower leak. They want to fix at the next oil change. Sucks but at least they can and will fix it.

The parts are cheap and the effects of a leaking cam seal can be very expensive. If either the cam or crank seals are shot and the timing belt is exposed to oil, it can cause the belt to fail prematurely. Over time, seals harden and begin to leak.
