So I got through my whole axle swap with little resistance and on the last step I get stuck. It was somewhat stripped when I got to it and it was in there way too tight so I finished up the job of striping it. I stripped the filler plug in my rear diff and ended up taking a bolt and welding it to the remains of the plug. With a little heat it backed right out.
I went to the harware store and replaced it with an external square plug. Install the drain plug , the bottom plug , and torque to foot pounds. The fill hole is also used as a level indicator for the oil.
Filling the differential. To set the level, over fill the differential and let the excess oil drain out. There are a couple of ways you can do this. Any parts supplier should carry the plug.
Basic GM differential plug. Mine was seized in place when I bought the truck. It must have been in tight because it was almost flush with the housing, I even tried drilling through it and using an ez out. I welded the area shut and installed a plug into the differential cover. Replace the washer on the fill plug , reinstall and tighten it.
The front differential is different only in the washer for the drain plug and the tools needed. Once you find the differential , visually inspect it for signs of damage and to locate the drain and filler plugs.
