Gear shift stuck in neutral

Q: Car will not shift gears, stuck in neutral. If the gear shift lever will not move then the shifter assembly has more than likely failed. It is common for the shift interlock solenoid to fail and lock the shifter in.

During the failure, the gear shifter display also indicated that the transmission was in the neutral position. So, no power will be transmitted to the wheels when you press the pedal. Shift linkage stuck in 2nd.


This happened suddenly and the car is locked into neutral. I am uncertain as to whether this can be managed by removing the console to access the gear shifter. There appears to be some mechanical blockage to block shifting in either direction. Remove the transmission filler plug. Using a light, look inside and you will see a large gear.


If the transmission is stuck in reverse, take a long screwdriver or a small pry bar and pry the large gear forward.

The dealer said he has replaced the same piece on same vehicle within a month period. I have another question for you, when you put it in first gear , did the shift lever feel strange when you pulled it back to neutral ? Mower is stuck in neutral gear. Took the mower up an incline and came back down.


You cannot shift to forward or reverse. But, it is a problem when the automatic gear shift stuck in park despite applying the brakes.

My MGB was having difficulties shifting into 1st gear and just the other day I kind of forced it a little while stopped and now the shifter seems stuck between 1st and 3rd gear. But the tranny is in neutral as I can push the car. A fuse can cause car to be stuck in park. I shifted my gear lever with my foot up or down, with and without clutch lever applie nothing happens.


The clutch pedal feels normal.
